We’ve recently welcomed HAY’s new Backflip Chair into the store, and it’s already one of those pieces we keep coming back to.

Designed by Icelandic designer Gudmundur Ludvik, Backflip started with a simple question: can a folding chair be just as beautiful and comfortable as an everyday dining chair? The answer is hidden in its backrest. A clever mechanism allows the chair to fold in one smooth movement, while keeping all of the technical details almost completely out of sight.

Made from solid wood and moulded plywood, it has a beautifully simple expression when unfolded, and when there’s no need for them, the chairs simply fold away. There’s even a wall bracket that allows you to hang up to two chairs when they’re not in use.
